It is expected that the Chinese Jiu Tian unmanned aircraft will make its first flight near the end of June 2025, marking the start of the world’s first new category of military aircraft. The aircraft was built to fly up to 7,000 kilometers and at an altitude of 15,000 meters and can hold up to 100 small drones that it can send up while airborne. In addition, it may carry other smart weapons, possibly cruise missiles. The aircraft was first showcased at the Zhuhai Airshow in November 2024 and is meant to both launch drones and guide them after they take off. There are no other aircraft being designed in the world that are like these. Many people compare it to an aircraft carrier in the sky and if all goes well, it could be the first in a series of drone carriers that deploy greater numbers or larger types of drones. The work on this technology is taking place now that drones have become more important in wars, as seen in Sudan, Yemen, South Lebanon and Ukraine.
Jiu Tian Unmanned Drone Carrier Aircraft
Jiu Tian’s development is part of a wider movement where China leads in introducing entirely new types of drones for military purposes. In addition, China has introduced the CH-5 unmanned bomber, the WZ-9 Divine Eagle for remote radar observation and the WZ-7 surveillance drone which can currently fly at hypersonic speeds. Other hypersonic drones have been introduced in the country since then. Yet, the difficulties of turning the Jiu Tian into a drone carrier may be great, but China leading in AI research is expected to give it distinctive benefits in using such a system. Although ideas for flying aircraft carriers were studied during the Cold War, especially by the United States, China is now on the verge of fielding one first.
